Welcome and introduction

My love is like a red, red rose by Robert Burns

O my Luve 's like a red, red rose

That's newly sprung in June:

O my Luve 's like the melodie

That's sweetly play'd in tune!

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in luve am I:

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a' the seas gang dry:

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt wi' the sun;

I will luve thee still, my dear,

While the sands 0' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve,

And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my Luve,

Tho' it were ten thousand mile.

Annie's Song by John Denver & sung by Damien Jones

Reading: Song of Solomon 2, 1-13

1 I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. 2 As a lily among brambles, so is my love among maidens.

3 As an apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my

beloved among young men. With great delight I sat in his

shadow, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. 4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his intention toward me was love. 5 Sustain me with raisins, refresh me with apples; for I am faint with love. 6 O that his left hand were under my head, and that his right hand embraced me! 7 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the wild does: do not stir up or awaken love until it is ready!

8 The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills. 9 My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, there he stands behind our wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice. 10 My beloved speaks and says to me: "Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; 11 for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. 12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. 13 The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

Hymn:

Love Divine, all loves excelling,

Joy of heaven, to earth come down,

Fix in us thy humble dwelling,

All thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, thou art all compassion,

Pure unbounded love thou art;

Visit us with thy salvation,

Enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver,

Let us all thy grace receive;

Suddenly return, and never,

Never more thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,

Serve thee as thy hosts above,

Pray, and praise thee, without ceasing,

Glory in thy perfect love.

Finish then thy new creation

Pure and spotless let us be;

Let us see thy great salvation,

Perfectly restored in thee,

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise!

Poem: Longing- by Matthew Arnold

Come to me in my dreams, and then

By day I shall be well again!

For so the night will more than pay

The hopeless longing of the day.

Come, as thou cam'st a thousand times,

A messenger from radiant climes,

And smile on thy new world, and be

As kind to others as to me!

Or, as thou never cam'st in sooth,

Come now, and let me dream it truth,

And part my hair, and kiss my brow,

And say, My love why sufferest thou?

Come to me in my dreams, and then

By day I shall be well again!

For so the night will more than pay

The hopeless longIng of the day.

Reading: 1 John 4,7-12 & 16b-21

7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in

them.

16b God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world.

18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear;

for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has

not reached perfection in love. 19 We love because he

first loved us. 20 Those who say, "I love God," and hate

their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not

love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love

God whom they have not seen. 21 The commandment we

have from him is this: those who love God must love their

brothers and sisters also.

Prayers and Intercessions - Pauline Brown

Collect

Heavenly Father, you gave Valentine the courage to witness to the gospel of Christ, even to the point of giving his life for it. Help us to endure all suffering for love of you, and to seek you with all our hearts; for you alone are the source of life and love. Grant that we may have the courage and love to be strong witnesses of your truth to our friends and family and to the whole world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom Come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen

Hymn:

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,

To his feet thy tribute bring;

Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,

Who like me his praise should sing?

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favour

To our fathers in distress;

Praise him still the same as ever,

Slow to chide, and swift to bless:

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Glorious in his faithfulness.

Father-like, he tends and spares us,

Well our feeble frame he knows;

In his hands he gently bears us,

Rescues us from all our foes:

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Widely as his mercy flows.

Angels, help us to adore him;

Ye behold him face to face;

Sun and moon, bow down before him,

Dwellers all in time and space:

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise with us the God of grace.

Sharing the Peace

We turn around and greet our neighbour

Final blessing prayer

The Lord bless you and keep you,

the Lord make his face to shine on you

and be gracious to you,

the Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon

and bring you peace. Amen

We join together in the words of the Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

the love of God

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

be with you now and forever. Amen
